— Our story
Besteas began in a small Portland kitchen, with a list of teas we’d traveled for and a shorter list of pairings that pulled the right notes forward in each cup. We taste new combinations every season — what ends up in the shop is the short list of what’s holding up against the rest.
— The why
Most online tea shops are catalogs — a hundred teas sorted by region, with little to help you decide. We wanted the opposite: a small, considered collection, each tea explained, with the honey or biscuit that makes it sing shipping in the same box.
We use Wissotzky's blending lab for half our catalog because they have eighty years of practice and one of the most respected facilities in the world. Our originals — the Yunnan, the jasmine, the chamomile-verbena, the Moroccan mint — are blended in Portland by our herbalist, Bess Dallal, from leaf we source ourselves.
The pairings are the part nobody else does well. We don't partner with brands; we partner with makers. The wildflower honey is from a small Oregon apiary. The shortbread is baked in small batches with browned butter. Each pairing exists because it was tested side-by-side with the tea and the tea pulled the right notes forward. That’s the whole product.
Subscriptions exist because we drink tea every day and we wanted a way to share that rhythm. The Besties Box is picked by Bess; Your Library is built by you. Both pause, skip, or cancel at the touch of a button — and both arrive with a brewing card so you don't have to remember the temperature.
— Principles
Source the leaf.
Single-origin where it matters, blended with intention where it doesn't. Every estate or co-op is named on the page where you'd buy it.
Pair properly.
Honeys and biscuits selected by tasting, not by margin. We taste every combination side-by-side before it ships.
Tell the truth.
Teas blended with Wissotzky say so. The cup is the same; only the credit is different.
Honor the moment.
Brewing temps, steep times, and reinfusion counts on every product page — and on a card in every box. Tea is a practice, not a product.
